Maria was born and raised in Sweden. She now lives in Santa Barbara with her husband Glenn and three dogs.
Athletics, sports, and nutrition have always been Maria’s lifestyle. Skiing since she was five, sailing instructor at age 13, in school she was a competitive swimmer and played handball. Yes, that is a sport, a team sport played hard and fast.
At age 16 she started competing on the international windsurfing circuit with her sister becoming Swedish and Nordic champion as well as snagging a 6th place finish at World Championships at age 18. Maria then moved to Stockholm so in order to compete on her sponsored wind surfing team she had to commute 45 minutes twice a day for training. During her summers she also worked as a winds surfing instructor and managed a windsurfing school.
Maria spent 5 winters in France ski bumming, ice climbing, and ski randonne then rock climbing and parasailing through summers. Maria’s dream since childhood; however, had always been to be a pilot and that is what brought her to USA at age 26. She worked hard to fulfill her dream and now works for American Airlines flying Boeing 757/767.
In 1993 she moved to SB. Shortly thereafter she was recruited at the gym to try Outrigger canoeing. She has paddled for 18 years, raced and medaled in Canada, Australia, Hawaii, Tahiti and of course USA. Her highest ranking was a 3rd place finish at World Championships.
Maria then did a stint as a body builder. She did one natural bodybuilding competition at Venice beach placing 3rd at age 48.
Two years ago Maria and her husband Glenn walked in to Santa Barbara Strength. Maria fell in love with CrossFit. She thrives on the hard, intense workout and the atmosphere that the gym provides.
If you don’t see Maria at the gym she is probably out running, biking, paddling or playing with the dogs. Or, possibly off scuba diving, skiing or traveling with Glenn.
Maria’s motto is live life, play hard, stay active, and never be afraid to try something new.
